Welcome to Class S5A
S5A has a new teacher this year, Simon, but we are still keeping in touch with Dave Phillips using Zoom and MS Teams! This is a really important year for S5A as we look to help the students transition into post 16 further education. To help parents understand the options available and help choose the best destination for the pupils to move to Simon will run an after school session at the beginning of term 2 for any parents, carers and family members who would like to understand more about the routes available for students with an EHCP on leaving school.
There is a new subject on the curriculum as pupils are doing a day a week of vocational pathways. This involves work experience, volunteering, careers guidance and visits to colleges and other places they can study on leaving school. We will visit Brogdale CIC, East Kent Colleges, Liberty Training, Woodpecker Court and Supajam among others. We are doing work experience at the Samphire Hoe Country Park during terms 1, 2 and 4.
In Science we are learning about food chains and habitats, especially the local chalk streams, and have been river dipping in the River Stour where everyone caught some little fish to observe. In PSHE we are looking at group working, discussing our targets for the year and discussing what makes a healthy relationship. In World Studies we will be comparing school today with school in the 1960s for history, learning about France and trying to make some French recipes, and seeing how the French celebrate the key festivals like harvest and Christmas.
The focus for the year is very much on applying Maths and English skills in the real world, such as using money, and preparing for the Entry Level 1 and 2 exams to help transition from school. We are also studying two texts through the year- the film Kes and the novel Frankenstein.
To help them with their vocational skills pupils will also be taking part in fund raising activities which we really hope their families will support, such as cake sales, coffee mornings and Christmas gift sales. The pupils are really looking forward to being much more involved in community and enterprise activities as Canterbury returns to a more normal way of life.
