Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back and Happy New Year! I hope you were able to enjoy the festivities. We are excited to be back and look forward to what the year has in store for us.

After six months of maternity leave, I am very pleased to be back working alongside the staff and supporting all of the students here at St Nicholas school. I have missed you all!

The curriculum continues to focus on developing independence and working hard to develop as many functional life skills as possible. This will mean that throughout the year students will be taking part in a variety of community-based education opportunities which will include regular trips to use local amenities and have the chance to experience work related learning. Students will also be gaining credits in units which will contribute towards achieving a Diploma in our OCR Accreditation programme “life and living skills” at their appropriate entry level which will begin to prepare them for their future lives.

Timetabling: You should be receiving your child’s new 6th Form timetable for term 3.  should have received your child’s new 6th Form timetable for term 3. Students will take part in a variety of sporting activities including weekly PE lessons on Monday’s. Please support your child in ensuring they have appropriate clothing and footwear for these sessions. In addition to this, and, due to the colder weather, I would like to take this opportunity to ask that students who are attending Forest School or Muddy Wellies are dressed in older, warm clothing.

Cookery: We encourage the students to become more independent, and part of this includes regular cookery. We ask that when your child cooks, you send in £2.45 to cover the costs of their meal. Your child will not need a packed lunch on cookery days. Classes within the 6th Form cook fortnightly and text reminders will go out to remind you when your child is cooking.

Communication: Please feel free to contact myself or your child’s teacher at any time to discuss queries or issues you may have. We are contactable via email each weekday. Your child’s teacher will also endeavour to contact you at home via telephone once a week to check in and see how you are doing.

6th Form Fund: We do ask for a two-termly donation of £25. A huge part of our curriculum is based on encouraging students to become more independent, therefore we access a variety of community activities, practicing functional money handling skills within the community and trips out. This contribution allows our students to have the many ‘real life’ experiences as possible throughout their time with us. Payments can be made via cash or BACS using your child’s name as the reference (bank details below).  We kindly thank you for your support with this.

Tuck Shop: Every Friday, we run a tuck shop at lunch time as part of our mini-enterprise, encouraging pupils to develop their skills by working with money, completing stock checks and purchasing more stock to sell.  We would encourage the pupils to bring in no more than £2 if they would like to purchase any drinks or snack at the shop each week.

Wishing you the very best for the New Year,
