7th September 2022

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back! I hope you have been able to enjoy the summer.

Firstly, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Carrie Myhill, and I am the 14-19 Lead and Head of the Sixth Form department. I have had the pleasure of teaching many of the students within the Sixth Form for many years as a class teacher and through our school transition programmes.  Gary Mayne is now the Key Stage 5 Manager and he will be working alongside me this academic year to support with the running of the department. A big welcome to our year 12’s joining us too - we hope you enjoy your time with us!

As the students are now in Key Stage 5, the curriculum focusses on increasing independence and developing as many functional life skills as possible. This will mean that throughout the year students will be taking part in a variety of community-based education opportunities which will include regular trips to use local amenities and have the chance to experience work related learning.

Students will also be gaining credits in units which will contribute towards achieving a Diploma in our OCR Accreditation programme “life and living skills” at their appropriate entry level which will begin to prepare them for their future lives.  Some students will also be following our “vocational pathways” programme, achieving accreditation within the ASDAN Employability programme.

School dinner prices are £3.50 per day. Those entitled to free school meals can still claim this. The refectory has a large choice of hot dinners available, a meat or vegetarian main

meal, jacket potatoes, pastries, and pasta dishes. There is also fruit, salad and sandwiches available for students to choose from too.

We kindly ask for a two-termly contribution towards the many ‘real life experiences’ we offer our young people throughout their time with us. This enables us to offer a wide variety of programmes and activities suitable to our young people’s interests (examples include using local amenities such as cafes / shops, and participating in programmes such as, home management & life skills). We ask that this contribution is £25 and that payments are made via cash where possible. We thank you for your support with this.

There will be regular parent meetings throughout the year where the Sixth Form team look forward to meeting you and discussing your child’s progress. Please feel free to contact me,

or your child’s teacher at any time to discuss any queries and issues, or via the home-school contact book.

Student timetables will follow next week once student options have been finalised and we have all settled into our new classes and the way of school life once more. Please support your child in ensuring they have appropriate clothing and footwear for offsite activities, swimming / hydro and other sessions.

Best Wishes,

Carrie Myhill
